Anna's Angel Update: November 2007

We're approaching another Thanksgiving and we have so much to be thankful for! We've had another six months of precious life with Anna since our last update. When Anna was a little girl, it became a tradition in our home to think of three things to thank God for every night at bedtime (never repeating the same one on another night!) It was just a sweet bedtime ritual when she was very young, but as she has faced cancer and some of life's greatest trials, it has become became a particularly special gift. It's amazing how life changing gratefulness can be.

But as all "cancer families" understand so well, our gratefulness never quite outweighs the uncertainty in our hearts when the date of the next MRI is looming. We constantly pray for all our friends, rejoicing with some and grieving with others as their results come back. And of course we pray for cures and for our amazing doctors and nurses. This month we also pray for good MRI results again for Anna.

The lives and the hearts of the families that you allow us to touch are filled with despair. They are trapped in thoughts of their child's shattered lives, mounting bills, loneliness, and fear of what the future holds. But the grace you offer them through your gifts is like a much needed rain on their terribly parched hearts. There is nothing sadder or lonelier than grieving without hope, although sometimes I wonder if they realize just how lonely and hurt they are - until the hope you give them begins to make it more bearable. Your generosity doesn't lessen their grief, but your expressions of love absolutely do help heal their hearts.

We've seen examples of it over and over again. One of the most recent - a precious little girl. There's a part of her that truly believes she is now a princess because of the way she has been treated by our angels. And this belief has become her saving grace. She is filled with absolute and pure joy as she puts her new crown on her sweet, bald head. When she needs it most, she returns to her world of being a princess and escapes the fear and sadness of her fight against cancer. You have made her a princess and she insists that she has much less time to be sick now. In a hurry to get past her relentless setbacks, "the princess" pushes through her pain again and again, determined to return to the joy of the fantasy world you helped her create for herself.

All of the children come back to life a little each time our angels allow us to provide what they need most. And more than once the families, and even the children, have been known to ask if God sent these angels to them. We wish we could be there to hear those words and tell them emphatically, "Yes!" Here are those you have sprinkled with hope and life since our last update...

$166.90 J.C. Penney, $50 QuikTrip Gas Card, $170 Spa Sydell Gift Card, $159.15 Old Navy Clothing (for Aunt), $551.84 Target Clothing, shoes and a few toys for the children
One of the saddest stories, and yet one of the sweetest we've ever heard. A nine year old little girl (the patient) and her two little brothers lost their mother 2½ years ago to Lupus. (There is no father in their lives.) Soon after they suffered that loss, the little girl also was forced to live with physical and sexual abuse at the hands of two uncles in her family. Not only was this child grieving the loss of her only parent and a victim of a disgusting crime in her own home, she was also diagnosed with an unusually severe case of sickle cell. This poor child's bones have deteriorated so quickly that she will soon need to have both hips replaced. Somehow, through it all, her social worker says this precious child always manages to have a smile on her face and makes the best of everything.

The great news for these three children is that they are now being raised by a 25 yr. old aunt, who has come to their rescue. She has taken them in and loves them as if they're her own, in spite of the fact that she is a single mother herself, with a very young son who also has sickle cell. What an admirable young woman she is. She is fighting hard for custody of these children and we think she is nothing short of amazing - and a godsend for these children. The children's needs for clothing and shoes were great, but we didn't want to leave her out. We made sure she also got new clothes and most of all, a well deserved ½ day at Spa Sydell to treat herself.

$1671.14 ($290 Sprint, $240.51 Eagle Bank for car payment, $43.54 water bill, $97.09 sewer bill, $1000 check for cash.
These bills and this cash were sent to a family in Kentucky that Larry heard about at work. A single mom who worked on one of his accounts had a seven year old daughter with a brain tumor. This mom had worked very few hours in the last few months, determined to spend as much time as possible with her daughter who was now in the care of hospice. Things had gotten so tight financially for her that she and her children had moved in with her ex-husband and his new wife to help make ends meet and to make life as smooth as possible for their very sick daughter. Their hospice worker was so impressed with this family and how determined they were to rise above any of their own personal issues to make this situation work for this precious little girl. We were, too. And because of you, we were able to let them know and to help take a little of the financial pressure off of them. What a special family. This little girl passed away on Oct. 6th.

$70 Spa Sydell for one hour massage, $747.15 Target for clothing, dolls and educational toys.
For a newly diagnosed 7 yr. old cancer patient, her single mom and 3 yr old sister. Mom was recently fired from her job due to being hospitalized herself and according to the child's social worker, she has very limited resources. This 7 yr. old little girl is now blind due to her brain tumor and mom is extremely stressed about her needs for a special school or at least a special program for the blind. However, even more pressing, right now her children just need clothes that fit them. Thanks to our angels, we could lift that load and give this mom a break, too. Our angels provided the children and mom with new clothes, shoes, and winter coats, and gave mom a much needed massage at Spa Sydell, too.

$399.80 Target, $170 Spa Sydell, $697.03 Old Navy for clothing, shoes, school supplies and an Ipod.
9 yr. old little girl with cancer. Has a 12 yr. old sister and a 17 yr. old sister. All three girls are being raised by their grandparents. The 9 yr. old little girl, who is extremely shy, is going through chemotherapy treatments. Although she has a wig, the kids at school are constantly teasing her about being bald. Her social worker thought maybe a little "back to school" shopping spree on her behalf might cheer her up and make her feel better about herself. Also, she let us know that these grandparents were fabulous, but elderly and absolutely worn out. They had no extra money for themselves or for the kids and she was hopeful that Anna might have the money to do something nice for them as well. She did. Thank you so much!

$320 Stacy's Pharmacy for chemotherapy
Anna was confused about this request because it was for chemo and yet we knew this little friend was in the care of hospice. We learned that the chemo was not to try to heal him, but just to keep his cancer "in check" enough to help manage his pain. He was on Medicaid and it wouldn't cover compounding his medications, so his social worker and his doctor were hopeful that Anna might be able to help. Thank goodness she was. This little boy is very special to us.

$200 Kroger, $400 QuikTrip, $273.42 Target, $286.87 J.C. Penney
This patient is a 14 yr. old girl and just lost her 11 yr. old brother in June. He had the same diagnosis and had just gone through the same surgery this young girl had. There is another 17 yr. old brother in the family who seems to be healthy. This family has just relocated to Atlanta from Missouri, desperate not to lose another child. They were willing to do anything for her and came to Atlanta to get the best care possible for her, but the temporary housing they chose was unsafe. They had already been stolen from once and didn't have much to begin with. Their social worker was helping them find better housing but asked if Anna might be able to help with school clothes, groceries and gas to get them to/from the hospital. Because they've just lost a child and now have to fight with a second one, we understood when their social worker said that their stress level was "through the roof". Their needs were great and we knew that anything Anna could do to relieve some of that stress would be helpful.

$1231.60 Wachovia Bank Paid mortgage payment for a family of a 4 yr. old little girl.
Her cancer came back with a vengeance and both parents took an unpaid leave to spend time with her before she passed away. Her dad desperately wanted to continue to stay with her until she was gone, but the mortgage company was demanding payment. Their social worker contacted us, asking if we could help so that he could continue taking more time off with his little girl. There was no choice to make here. Because of you, mom and dad were both there with her when the angels came for their child. How can we possibly thank you for that? There is no more precious gift.

$800 QuikTrip
Gas Cards to four different bone marrow transplant families who have to travel long distances for treatment. These families were desperate for help with gas expenses to bring their children to Atlanta for their cancer treatments. You took care of it.

$299.80 Target (Plus $100 donated by our family) Pantry items, blankets, mattress pads, DVDs, disposable cameras, and cleaning products donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
These items were donated, in memory of our precious little friend Catie Wilkins, on what would have been her 5th birthday. Catie was very special to us and there is never a day that passes when our hearts don't ache for her family, for her new baby sister who will have to wait to meet her in heaven, and for a world that was robbed of knowing another amazing child, because of this disease that we hate so much called pediatric cancer. We love and miss you, Catie.

$800 Cash
Cash to help a family who was going to New York for a "last resort" treatment, desperately looking for hope. Their social worker asked if we could help with expenses for their trip. Our angels said "absolutely" with their gifts.

$630 Carden Properties
Paid rent for a foster mom who was in the process of adopting this little boy. He was having a bone marrow transplant so she was unable to return to work. She'd taken a day away from him to have a yard sale to try to make her car payment but still could not pay her rent. She was this little boy's angel - and you were hers. Thank you.

$150 Wal-Mart gift card for a little boy just diagnosed with leukemia.
His dad works in North Carolina and hadn't worked in two weeks. He just couldn't bring himself to leave his little boy. He also had two other children. His social worker asked if we might be able to just give him a little help with gas and food and she requested a $150 gift card from Wal-Mart to help them out. How sweet that this dad couldn't leave his son. And how sweet that you, our angels, would allow him to stay there with him.

$500 QuikTrip gas card
This card was bought for the family of a 12 yr. old little boy who is from a single parent home. His mother stays with him at the hospital while his grandparents keep his two siblings, bringing them to see him every day. It puts quite a financial strain on them however, so the child's social worker asked if Anna could help with gas expenses.

$32.23 ToysRUs for three backpacks, $1146.23 Old Navy, and $1119 Target for clothing, shoes, school supplies and toys for a family with eight children (ages 10 months-10yrs).
This is a family of refugees from Nigeria. The father of these children is in prison and, to say that their mother is overwhelmed could not be a greater understatement. She has two very sick children (both have extremely severe blood disorders called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome (SCIDs). She has no idea how to write a check or refill a prescription. In her culture, women are forbidden to make decisions or have any independence. Now complete independence is required of her. It's hard to imagine the daily conflicts and fears this mother faces as she wrestles with cultural acclimation, her children's illnesses and now being a single mother of eight. Their social worker said their needs were tremendous. They had no school supplies and needed clothing and shoes. Knowing that these children all loved the Disney Channel made it fun to shop for them! It took a little time, but we found Disney Channel-related backpacks for all the older children and some Hannah Montana and High School Musical gifts for the older girls. Everybody got plenty of clothes and shoes (including mom), and the children got their school supplies as well, thanks to your generosity.

$1502.82 Midland Mortgage Company
Paid two house payments for the family of a five yr. old little boy who had relapsed neuroblastoma. Mom works at Kroger and dad is unemployed. The financial and emotional stress of their situation was unimaginable. They had already restructured their mortgage but were still on the verge of foreclosure, until you came in and opened your hearts and your wallets to them. What a special gift at such a heart wrenching time in the life of this family.

$1266.06 ($389.08 Sprint, $250.98 City of Baldwin, $211.96 Franklin Financial, $414.12 Drive)
Anna chose to pay these bills for a 16 yr. old girl who had made a mistake and was pregnant. To drastically complicate things for this young girl, she was diagnosed with AML (a form of leukemia) just one week before giving birth. Her boyfriend, the father of her baby, was staying with her at the hospital and her mother was taking care of her new baby. Everybody's lives were turned upside down. They were devastated, afraid, and now this grandmother who was now back in the role of being a mother was suddenly unable to support herself or her family. She was terribly behind on several of her bills. But you gave her a little room to breathe.

$500 ($300 QuikTrip Gas Card, $100 Kroger Gift Card, $100 Target Gift Card)
An 8 yr. old girl from Columbus, GA who had come to Atlanta for a bone marrow transplant with her sister as the donor. Her social worker contacted us to request help for them. She said they had no other resources and felt they'd gotten very overwhelmed with their travel and living expenses.

$2000 Thomas Funeral Home
This six year old little girl passed away just seven months after her diagnosis with a Glioblastoma brain tumor. Anna was asked by the Brain Tumor Foundation For Children if she could help this family pay for their child's funeral. Anna was able to send $2000 to the funeral home to help with their expenses.

This update includes fewer examples of gifts from Anna's Angel Fund than usual. For the first time, we've had to make some very difficult choices because the requests for Anna's help have greatly outweighed the donations to her Angel Fund. Choosing which children to help has been very hard but we have had to trust that some of these children and families were meant to be wrapped up in the love of other angels. Anna truly believed that the children and families above were "the ones she was supposed to help first".

Although donations have been fewer, it is still humbling to look back at the gifts Anna has received for her Angel Fund. We are so thankful for the joy she continues to find in this work and we can't begin to express what your support has meant to her, to us, and especially to so many children who are fighting pediatric cancer.

On this Thanksgiving, we give thanks for many things, always including you! You are the instrument of His peace, His grace, and His love for these children and families that we care so much about. You give them what they need, when they need it most. We could never possibly measure the value of that or find a way to adequately thank you. We pray that you and those you love will be blessed during this holiday season!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Lisa, Larry and Anna
